UN Report Shows Global Climate Efforts Fall Short
According to the UN evaluation, only 64 countries, approximately one-third of the signatories, had submitted new commitments.
If these plans were fully enacted, they would lower emissions by 17% by 2035 compared with 2019 levels—significantly short of the 37% global reduction necessary to restrict warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit).
The report also referenced a US climate plan proposed during the tenure of now-former US President Joe Biden, which current US President Donald Trump had previously indicated he would not enforce.
Smaller and developing countries frequently wait for major polluters to take the lead, leaving significant emitters such as India and Saudi Arabia without submitted strategies.
The European Union issued only an unofficial declaration of its goals, whereas China committed to a 7%–10% reduction over the coming decade just days before the deadline but has yet to formally present its plan.
The EU confirmed that it remains on course to achieve its previous objective of reducing emissions by 55% from 1990 levels by 2030 and seeks to cut emissions by 66.25% to 72.5% by 2035, relative to 1990 levels.
The UN concluded that if existing climate plans are carried out, including those of China and the EU, global emissions could fall by roughly 10% by 2035.
