China warns Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ cannot replace UN

(MENAFN) China reiterates its firm backing of a United Nations–centered global system, rejecting suggestions that a proposed “board of peace” put forward by US President Donald Trump could supplant the world body, according to statements made on Wednesday.

Addressing questions from reporters in Beijing, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson stresses that Beijing remains committed to multilateralism and to the UN’s foundational role in international affairs, regardless of shifting global dynamics.

“As for the UN, China has always practiced true multilateralism. No matter how the international situation changes, China firmly upholds the UN-centered international system, the international order based on international law, and the basic norms of international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” the spokesperson says.

The remarks come in response to Trump’s comments suggesting that while the UN should continue to exist, his proposed “board of peace” could potentially take on a role that replaces it, as stated by reports.

According to official announcements, the White House revealed last Friday the creation of the board, saying it would “play an essential role in fulfilling” the 20-point plan aimed at permanently ending Israel’s war on Gaza and rebuilding the enclave. The board is also described as being responsible for “providing strategic oversight, mobilizing international resources, and ensuring accountability as Gaza transitions from conflict to peace and development.”

“The UN just hasn't been very helpful. I am a big fan of the UN potential but it has never lived up to its potential,” Trump says when questioned during a briefing on Tuesday about whether the new body is intended to replace the UN.

“I believe you got to let the UN continue because the potential is so great,” he adds.

Pressed further on whether his board of peace could take the UN’s place, Trump replies: “well, it might.”
