Toyota Extends Global Auto Sales Crown

(MENAFN) Japan’s automotive heavyweight Toyota Motor once again preserved its position at the top of worldwide vehicle sales last year, reinforcing its advantage over its nearest competitor, Volkswagen.

When accounting for its Hino Motors and Daihatsu subsidiaries, Toyota Motor reported that vehicle deliveries in 2025 climbed 4.6% compared with the previous year, reaching a total of 11.32 million units, according to a statement issued on Thursday.

In spite of ongoing semiconductor supply constraints, Toyota succeeded in keeping production volumes elevated throughout the year. Its manufacturing output expanded by 5.7% year-on-year, amounting to 11.22 million vehicles.

Meanwhile, sales at its closest challenger, Volkswagen, slipped by 0.5% to 8.98 million units over the same period. The decline was attributed to difficult market conditions in China as well as the effects of US tariffs weighing on demand in North America.

By surpassing 11 million vehicles sold during the year, the Japanese automaker Toyota further strengthened its lead over Volkswagen, marking its sixth straight year as the world’s top-selling car manufacturer.

Toyota’s historic sales performance was largely fueled by robust interest in hybrid (gasoline-electric) vehicles. These models represented 42% of the company’s worldwide sales, whereas fully electric vehicles accounted for just 1.9%.

Within China’s fiercely competitive auto market, Toyota managed a modest sales uptick of 0.2%, registering its first expansion there in four years.

Shipments from Japan to the United States jumped 14.2%, totaling around 615,000 vehicles, supported by strong demand for best-selling models, especially the RAV4 crossover.
