China Urges All Sides to Act on Peace as Ukraine War Enters Fifth Year
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, speaking at a news conference in Beijing, said a shift in the conflict's diplomatic landscape had become visible in recent days, with various parties sustaining a momentum toward dialogue — which she described as the "only way out for the settlement of the crisis."
"We support any efforts conducive to peace," Mao said, framing China's posture as one of principled neutrality and constructive engagement.
She pressed further, urging a decisive push toward a durable resolution. "We hope all parties will grasp the opportunities and achieve a comprehensive, lasting, abiding peace deal. China is ready to work with the international community to play a constructive role in advancing the political settlement of the crisis," Mao added.
Responding to pointed questions over whether Beijing had financially or strategically benefited from the prolonged conflict, Mao pushed back firmly. China's "position is objective and clear... we always advocate for the end of fighting," she said, stressing that Beijing would "never add fuel and exploit the situation" for its agenda and that "we do not accept shift-blaming."
The war, which erupted on Feb. 24, 2022, has since claimed thousands of civilian and combatant lives and displaced millions of people across both sides of the Ukraine-Russia border — a humanitarian toll that continues to mount with no formal ceasefire in sight.
