Japan’s H3 Rocket Returns to Space After Six-Month Grounding

The H3 Launch Vehicle No. 6 lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture at 9:53 a.m. local time (0053 GMT), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed. The rocket successfully reached its planned orbit approximately 16 minutes after liftoff, fulfilling its primary mission objectives.
The mission drew intense attention as it represented the rocket's first flight since the failure of H3 No. 8 in December 2025, when a malfunction left a satellite stranded short of its intended orbit. The setback prompted JAXA and manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to suspend all launches while engineers investigated the root cause and introduced corrective measures.
Friday's flight inaugurated the H3-30 configuration — a leaner, lower-cost variant of the rocket that operates without side-mounted solid rocket boosters. The new design aims to slash launch costs and broaden Japan's appeal across the increasingly crowded commercial launch sector.
The H3 serves as Japan's next-generation flagship launch vehicle, jointly developed by JAXA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a successor to the H-IIA rocket, offering more affordable and flexible access to space for government, scientific, and commercial missions alike.
